Program Overview

Through its School Program, the Evanston Ecology Center strives to foster a greater appreciation, awareness and knowledge of the natural environment and our interdependence with it. This specific program provides school children with field trips which provide interdisciplinary learning and introduces them to major ecological issues.

Reservations

Reservations for these programs can be made Ecology Center at 847-448-8256. We have capacity for 25 per class. Some programs can accommodate more than one class at a time. A two-week advance notice is required but earlier registration is recommended due to the popularity of these programs. Ecology Center office hours are Monday-Saturday, 9am-4:30pm.

Preschool Loan Boxes
Developed through a grant from the Evanston Community Foundation.
Each preschool loan box contains ideas for group activities, finger plays, poems, art activities, and snacks. Some also contain books and videos. Suggested for 2-5 year-old children.

Creatures of the Night
Some of the most remarkable creatures are those that rarely or never see the light of day. Introduces concepts of day and night as well as shadows and the adaptations the animals have to be active at night.

Honeybees
Honeybees are social insects. Types of honeybees, structure of the hive and relationships between different bees, as well as with humans are discussed.

Introductions to Habitats
Habitats are places where things live and grow naturally. Three major habitats of Illinois; prairie, woodlands and wetlands are covered.

Alien Invaders


Explores the concepts of non- native invasive species. These include the Gypsy Moth, Asian Long-horned Beetle, Garlic Mustard, Buckthorn, Zebra Mussel and more. Life cycles, pests, interactions between plants and animals, and the presence of the these invaders in Evanston. Box includes the Illinois state curriculum "Legacy of a Pest." Grades K-5

Everyone Needs a Habitat


Focuses on the basic survival needs of all living things, the components of a habitat and some of the wildlife that lives in Evanston. Contents include mounted specimens of both a cottontail rabbit and a gray squirrel and information on different biomes. Grades K-5

Litter and Garbage


Books and activities help students think about litter, garbage and how it effects the world around them. Many of the crafts involve finding ways to `recycle' everyday objects and find new uses for them. Grades K-5

Paper


Explains how recycled paper is made and includes directions and materials for making recycled paper in your classroom. Grades 1-3

The Records of Life


Looks at fossils and the ways that fossils can be formed. Contents include a collection of fossils that represent various plants and animals of long ago as well as fossils that represent the different fossilization processes. Grades 1-4

Recycled Content


Introduces the students to recycling and how trash can be a valuable community resource. Students will be able to explore how trash is disposed of, what natural resources are in most of our trash cans and how they can be recycled. Contents include assorted trash (clean) and resource sheets. Grades 1-4

Seeds

Focuses on providing hands-on experiences with seeds. A variety of seeds is provided and it includes a collection of seeds that can be explored, categorized, counted or characterized. Grades K-2

Trees

Emphasizes awareness and knowledge of the trees around us as important parts of the environment. Includes lesson plans, books, and a collection of "tree cookies" where the rings on the trunk slices can be counted. Grades K-5

Vertebrates

Looks at the characteristics of the five major vertebrate groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Contents include a collection of vertebrate skeletons and skulls. Grades 3-5
